Respiratory Physiotherapy

Our Respiratory Physiotherapist can treat any condition which impacts the respiratory system of your child.

Respiratory physiotherapy is an imperative part of treatment for children and young people with the conditions listed below. A respiratory physiotherapy assessment can identify problem areas and formulate a programme of airway clearance techniques to enhance clearance of bronchial secretions to minimise infection and prevent lung damage from repeated infections. In the long term treatment aims to delay the progression of respiratory disease and maintain optimal respiratory function for as long as possible.

There are many groups of children who will benefit from specific respiratory physiotherapy input, the list below is by no means exhaustive:-

  • Cystic Fibrosis (CF)

  • Non CF Bronchiectasis

  • Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD)

  • Hypersecretory Asthma

  • Disordered breathing patterns

  • Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome (CHVS)

  • Respiratory muscle weakness due to neuromuscular conditions such as SMA and DMD

  • Impaired cough due to neuromuscular conditions or tone problems

  • Impaired secretion clearance in Cerebral Palsy leading to frequent chest infections

Physiotherapy treatment may involve: -

  • Assessment and development of appropriate child specific respiratory treatment plans.

  • Training to parents and carers in appropriate and effective respiratory management and treatment.

  • Advice on age appropriate airway clearance treatments.

  • Assisting with monitoring the use of cough assist machines for children who are unable to effectively cough due to respiratory muscle weakness.

  • Inhalation therapy advice.

  • Support and advice on adherence with treatment.

Some children may benefit from specific assessment and advice from a respiratory specialist physiotherapist in addition to the physiotherapy treatment they are receiving to support them with their motor skills.
